Crave (Capitol Hill)

September 13, 2006 at 2:30 am , by sara

I got off work at 8am, tired and bedraggled, and my boyfriend and I decided to go to Crave for breakfast. I hadn’t been there for over a year and I wanted to see how things were going.

It was sparsely populated that early on a Tuesday, but sunny and warm. The glass walls are like a greenhouse.

“We’re out of the mango salsa,” our server warned us as he poured the coffee, “they used it all up last night. I made some fresh tomato salsa instead.”

The mango salsa was meant to come with their version of huevos rancheros–eggs any style with cornbread, beans, and a chipotle cream sauce. Damn. Amazing how when someone tells you you can’t have something, that’s exactly what you want.

I perused the menu (it’s on-line, by the way…www.cravefood.com). Several omelets (crab with poblano pepper, chicken sausage with roasted peppers), an egg mc muffin like sandwich (but with brioche, prosciutto and gruyere), french toast, oatmeal.

I went with the huevos. I took it as a good sign that the salsa was fresh, even if it wasn’t mango.

And oh my. Eggs over easy with homemade slow cooked pinto beans with just the right amount of smoky sweetness, moist cornbread with roasted green chilies folded into the batter, a drizzle of delicately spicy chipotle cream sauce, and topped with a cilantro laced red pepper tomato salsa.

It was one of the best breakfasts I’ve ever had.

My boyfriend had the sausage pepper omelet, also very good, carefully cooked with good sausage and roasted peppers and adorned with a garnish of twisted orange and fresh strawberries, but really….he was eyeing my huevos the whole time.

So in sum? Crave is doing very well. And this is just breakfast. Their lunch and dinner menu had me drooling. They have one of the best grilled cheese sandwiches in the city (cheddar, mustard, apples and thick cut bacon on sourdough).

Next time maybe I’ll go before work.
