Every now and then West Seattle has something that is truly extraordinary, something worth driving over the bridge.

I’ve heard murmurings about this place for a few months now. This past Saturday I decided to check it out.

It’s a tiny place and a bit hard to find. Next to the frame shop, if that means anything to you. Across from Talarico’s. I walked in to find the line nearly touching the door, each table full. There was this excitement in the air, people coming from their christmas shopping.

The first case was full of chocolates of all kinds (passion fruit, almond), the second had these elaborate cakes, and the last had pastries. On the wall behind are breads, old world breads with thick crusts. As I pondered my options someone came out from the kitchen with a handful of freshly baked baguettes.

The line moved up a bit and I stared at the cakes– buche de noel, raspberry bomb, cherry almond tart, mocha cheesecake. They glistened in this unreal way. The guy behind asked, “do you know what’s good? I’ve heard everything’s good.”

When it was finally my turn in line I ordered the pear cherry almond tart and a baguette. They wrapped the baguette in parchment paper and I couldn’t help myself, I crunched right into it on the street. It was amazing. Almost the best baguette I’ve ever had, but the best was in France. The perfect chewy texture with this amazing crust and just a bit of sweetness.

The tart was wrapped in this box that somehow had curved edges, like an elaborate hat box. It was beautiful. I brought it to a party and in the first five minutes they had unwrapped it and tried to figure out how to make another.

But the taste! Such a beautiful combination of pear and cherry and marzipan with the perfect pate sucre.

So much left to try….I’ll definitely be back.
