La Fondita # 2 (White Center)

A few weeks ago we started a garden club. Labor exchange is the idea, though mostly we just eat and look at each others gardens (or potential gardens). Last week we went to Kyung’s house and decided she needed a wall of bamboo to screen in her patio, so this past friday we went on our first outing to Clinton Bamboo.
If you haven’t been there, you should. It is damn cool. From the outside it looks just like a little house, but on the inside are all these bamboo groves. Some as big as my wrist.
But I digress. Because really the point is that as we drove there we passed through taco truck heaven (white center/burien/ambaum boulevard) and it made us very hungry. So after a good hour searching through multiple kinds of bamboos and picking out some blue hostas, we headed for the taco truck.
Being new to taco-truck-land, we started with the obvious choice—La Fondita #2. Stationed between 15th and 16th just a block south of Roxbury, it’s almost on the main drag. AND…it’s right next to the roasted corn place.
The menu is extensive, burritos and quesadillas and mulitas, but call me a purist–I wanted tacos. You can mix and match with the tacos and they are damn cheap (as they should be). $4.99 for three. They have carne asada, pork adobado, chicken, pork carnitas and lengua. I went for asada, pollo and adobado.
The food came out in 2 minutes. They were generous with the cilantro, garnished the plate with a roasted jalapeno and onion, and served it with a slice of lime. The carne asade needed a bit more spice (or a bit better meat), but the chicken and pork were both great, tender and full of flavor. I’m sure in California they have better tacos but in Seattle we are lucky if they’re made with corn tortillas. These were solid.
I washed it all down with a creamy horchata (a cinnamon flavored rice milk) which was up there with those I had in Guatemala. For a moment, as we sat in the ramshackle stand eating our tacos on paper plates, it almost felt like we were in another country.
Next time I’m checking out that roasted corn.

Thanks for reviewing something in White Center. We live up the hill from White Center and have not ventured far from the Sal. Bakery.
