Baguettte Box (Capitol Hill)

There’s something about a good sandwich.
Not stale turkey in saran wrap. Not those grilled focaccia things with too much bread and wilted lettuce. A real drip down your arm oh my god type of sandwich.
I realized the other day as I was driving down Pine that I’ve told you about Paseo but I’ve never mentioned Baguette Box. From Eric Banh of Monsoon, this place just rocks.
It isn’t big, but it’s classy. Dark wood. Paintings on the wall. But it’s the menu that stops you in your tracks:
- Braised red wine pork shoulder
- Drunken chicken
- Assortment of salumi meats (finocchiona when I was there)
- Grilled chorizo
- Berkshire pork belly
Not to mention the sides of truffle fries or roasted beets.
The drunken chicken is an amazing invention—like general tso’s chicken on a sandwich, or “fat girl chicken,” as we called it in college. Breaded, deep fried spicy chicken on a le panier baguette.
But I decided to branch out and get the red wine braised pork. As I sat down at my desk and unwrapped my sandwich, I quickly realized my mistake–this was not desk food. The scent of pork wafted to the neighboring cubicle, the grease dripped down my arm.
Did that stop me? Not a chance. The pork was perfectly cooked, soft and pliant with the red wine drifting over it, never overwhelming the subtle pork flavor. What amazed me was the balance. With each bite the other ingredients pulled me in: the braised garlic and roasted peppers added sweetness, the pickled red onions gave it crunch and a pleasing sour bite, and the cilantro was a delicate top note. Thankfully it wasn’t a big sandwich because I couldn’t stop eating it.
What’s amazing is that with all those great meat options they’re also supposed to have some damn good vegetarian sandwiches, some crazy hot tofu. They even serve beer and wine though I bet this place is packed to the rafters in the evenings. Only open till 8pm though.
Did I mention there’s another one in Fremont?

I heart Baguette Box! I agree…it’s nice to have non-meat options that aren’t second-rate. And why, oh why, does it seem so difficult to find a good sandwich in Seattle, huh? BB has me covered when this question leaves me in distress.
