Licorous (Capitol Hill)

Sorry I haven’t written. We were in Vietnam for our honeymoon, and I haven’t felt like writing since we’ve been back.
It’s the rain that gets me down. And the economy isn’t helping.
I’m still managing to justify expensive drinks (treatment for the rain). Last week Kyung, Lynn and I met up at Licorous.
This place is nearly perfect. From the owners of Lark (and just next door), it’s a little slip of a place with a tiny menu. Mostly drinks. A few appetizer bites. Some desserts. You’d be hard pressed to get a full dinner.
We were the only ones there on a mid-afternoon Monday and it had this gauzy feel, the light turned amber by the curtains. We sat in a booth along the front wall, relishing the fact that our jobs let us drink during the day.
And oh the drinks. They are decidedly not cheap at $8.50 a pop and as Lynn says, “the alcohol ratio is slim.” But just reading the menu had me drooling: tequila infused with hibiscus flowers,
fresh grapefruit juice and rosewater topped with prosecco
You can even spring for a matching teeny appetizer for 2$.
I tried the tequila, Lynn went for the cucumber with Pimms and mint, and Kyung had the “Lark” (prosecco with grapefruit and campari). They were all wonderful, particularly the agave tequila with this rich hibiscus juice, like a tropical flower.
We had a few more drinks. And then there was the best drink of all– chile infused vodka with a hint of watermelon juice served up. That cold chill of vodka with a touch of sweetness from the watermelon and a final bite of spice at the end. Damn. I could drink it all night.
The food was well done, mostly little bites which it’s hard to say too much about. The duck rillettes were better than I expected– circles of duck confit topped with cherry compote. I’m a geoduck novice so I ordered the geoduck ceviche and I found it beautiful seasoned, but a bit challenging texturally. Like eating rubber bands.
Tuna crudo came drizzled with olive oil and lemon verbena, very fresh. But the real winner was the baby back ribs. Slightly sweet and hot with a beautiful thick sauce, they took the edge of that afternoon hunger. They were served with watermelon pickle which truthfully blew us away. Hard to describe, just the right balance of sweet and sour.
The one downside of Licorous was the longer we sat there, the more hipster it became. By the time we left I counted three fedoras and at least two people texting from their iphone.
I think the best time to go to licorous is in the afternoon. Just slip out before those hipsters start coming. Maybe head to Lark for dinner.
