Did you know a punk rock ice cream arcade just opened up in White Center?
Damn.
I’ve tried to go several times (they’ve only been open since then end of June) but the ice cream was sold out every time.

Did you know a punk rock ice cream arcade just opened up in White Center?

Damn.

I’ve tried to go several times (they’ve only been open since then end of June) but the ice cream was sold out every time.

Finally today I found the doors wide open, sunshine washing over the bright green walls. The flavors range from the familiar (vanilla) to off the map (mexican chocolate, birthday cake, thai tea, mango chili, blackberry chocolate chip and like 10 more that I can’t remember). And they make paletas, those mexican ice cream bars.

But the absolute topper is that when I asked for a waffle cone, they guy asked, “Do you want me to make you one?”

Then he pulls out this little waffle maker, cooks it up and wraps it with this cool contraption. It was amazing, warm and toasty like something out of a 1960s ice cream parlor. I went with the blackberry chocolate chip and the mexican chocolate. The mexican chocolate needed a little something, more cinnamon, more intense chocolatey-ness, maybe some chili. But the blackberry chocolate chip was out of this world, creamy with the perfect blend of berry and chocolate.

And the birthday cake! I had to try it. There are actual chunks of cake, frosting and all made by a vietnamese baker in white center. It tasted like that pink cake I always wanted when I was 5, the one with the sprinkles.

As if you need more reason to go to this place, they have 5 pinball machines and 4 old school atari and NES games lining the walls, including KISS pinball and Dig Dug.

“Gofers is Justin’s favorite,” the guy behind the counter said, “but I’m a big fan of Time Machine.”

To top it all, there is punk rock. Rumor is they’ll be hosting bands on Friday nights.

Damn. What more can you say.

Labor exchange is the idea, though mostly we just eat and look at each others gardens (or potential gardens). Last week we went to Kyung’s house and decided she needed a wall of bamboo to screen in her patio, so this past friday we went on our first outing to Clinton Bamboo.

If you haven’t been there, you should. It is damn cool. From the outside it looks just like a little house, but on the inside are all these bamboo groves. Some as big as my wrist.

But I digress. Because really the point is that as we drove there we passed through taco truck heaven (white center/burien/ambaum boulevard) and it made us very hungry. So after a good hour searching through multiple kinds of bamboos and picking out some blue hostas, we headed for the taco truck.

Being new to taco-truck-land, we started with the obvious choice—La Fondita #2. Stationed between 15th and 16th just a block south of Roxbury, it’s almost on the main drag. AND…it’s right next to the roasted corn place.

The menu is extensive, burritos and quesadillas and mulitas, but call me a purist–I wanted tacos. You can mix and match with the tacos and they are damn cheap (as they should be). $4.99 for three. They have carne asada, pork adobado, chicken, pork carnitas and lengua. I went for asada, pollo and adobado.

The food came out in 2 minutes. They were generous with the cilantro, garnished the plate with a roasted jalapeno and onion, and served it with a slice of lime. The carne asade needed a bit more spice (or a bit better meat), but the chicken and pork were both great, tender and full of flavor. I’m sure in California they have better tacos but in Seattle we are lucky if they’re made with corn tortillas. These were solid.

I washed it all down with a creamy horchata (a cinnamon flavored rice milk) which was up there with those I had in Guatemala. For a moment, as we sat in the ramshackle stand eating our tacos on paper plates, it almost felt like we were in another country.

Next time I’m checking out that roasted corn.

………………………………………………………………………..
La Fondita #2
98th between 15th and 16th in White Center (one block south of Roxbury)
Seattle, WA
(206) 551-0529
